The power of beliefs

Neuroscientists today have accepted and confirmed what Mahatma Gandhi stipulated more than half a century ago:

“Your beliefs become your thoughts
Your thoughts become your words
Your words become your actions
Your actions become your habits
Your habits become your values
Your values become your destiny”

In his infinite wisdom, Gandhi knew that our destiny (our life and behavior) is shaped by our underlying beliefs. Neuroscience today establishes that these beliefs, which were acquired from others (parents, school, society in general), reside in our subconscious mind and are so powerful that they run our lives. Thus, our subconscious mind and its programs (and not our conscious mind as we may often mistakenly think) are responsible for our everyday decisions. Moreover, we are completely unaware of this process. As a result, 95% of our behavior is unconscious.

Imagine then what kind of life one would have if these subconscious programs contain negative and disempowering beliefs? For example, a child who grew up in a negative environment where s/he experienced rejection or bullying, may grow up thinking and feeling that they are not worthy of love. Such belief would limit and disempower this person, keeping them from achieving their goals as an adult. However, 95% of the time we are unaware that this is happening.

The good news is that we can do something about it. Neurolinguistic programming (NLP) is a process that can help us 1) become aware of these limiting programs and 2) rewrite our limiting beliefs. In my NLP training, I had the opportunity to experience the benefits of NLP exercises as a trainee. As an NLP Coach, I am committed to offering these techniques to others so that they can free themselves from limiting beliefs that have kept them ‘hostage’ most of their life.
